Qingming Bridge Cultural Block in Nanchang Street, Wuxi
Project Client: Jiangsu Guyunhe Investment Development Co., Ltd.
Design Time: 2010
Project Scale: 20,000 ㎡
The Wuxi section of Jing–Hang Grand Canal is the earliest developed and best protected section. Wuxi Qingming Qiao Cultural Block in Nanchang Street is built along this section. It is one of the most traditional ancient blocks in Wuxi. While preserving historical accumulations of Wu culture (regional culture of Jiangsu and Zhejiang province) as well as local industrial and commercial culture, the site still maintains architectural style of the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China. With all these historical and cultural remains, it enjoys a long-term reputation with "the fascinated ancient charm from the thousand-year-old canal, century-long lasting industrial and commercial prosperity".
Distinctive local featuring elements are well integrated into the design of this project, such as elements of Wu culture, the Canal and historical evolution relics of local industry and commerce. By this means, the existing features of ancient architecture on the site are well protected, to keep the original unique sense of history in this ancient block. Accordingly, the block is designed as an open-air museum of history through combining various forms of business with functional partition of landscape space. Thus, it becomes a modern representation of Along the River During the Qingming Festival (a masterpiece painted in Northern Song Dynasty), showing the charm of ancient China for people in the 21st century.
