Inspired by the ancient Chinese poem "Ten mile long Qinhuai River, Six dynasties lasting prosperity with one Kunqu (one form of Chinese Opera) Peach Blossom Fan", the project is a modern representation of the most flourishing time in the memory of Nanjing. The representation is delivered in three aspects: the connection to water, the appreciation of Kunqu and the inheritance of ancient literati's spirits.
The master planning of the Cathy Courtyard in Nanjing followed the large-scale layout of "one river, two avenues, seven blocks and eight lanes" of the Jinling (old Nanjing) Capital. It tactfully integrates the beauty of the old Jinling culture into the design of modern courtyards and building blocks. With such integration, a brand-new living style labeled by Chinese culture is created. At the same time, the project also triggers reflection on how modern landscaping can help portray regional culture in our built environment.
